Limerick Challenge

In the Saturday, 21 June 2008, Issue No. 7 of the Bulletin for the 49th European Bridge Team Championships in the city of Pau, France from the 14th to the 28th of June, 2008, there are two entries for the challenge to the participating international players to enter a Limerick Contest.

The requirement was that the poet compose the limerick either in her/his native language or in Franglais or a combination of French and English. An example was provided by the editorial challengers of the Daily Bulletins. The basic guideline was to encourage the participating players to include the name of the city in France, called Pau, which is spoken phonetically as 'po', and an example was offered by the challengers.

In a mixed pairs at Pau just last week,

I had a game with a dame called Monique.

I bid a heart (cri de coeur),

Then one spade from her,

Raised to four in a great fit of pique.
