The British Gold Cup, or as it is better known, the BBL Gold Cup, was first played in the year 1931. It is one of the oldest, continuous bridge competition in the world and some of the greatest names in the game of bridge in the United Kingdom have participated in this event.

British Bridge League was the official British Bridge League website and contained entry forms and general information about the BBL and the major European and World Championships, results of BBL Tournaments and Championships together with any other details. Much of the information from this former website appears now on Ecats Bridge. The British Bridge League devolved into its constituent Unions on December 31, 1999, and this website no longer exists.

The British Bridge League indeed never decided to discontinue the Gold Cup tournament. The British Bridge League transferred all matters and responsibilities to the new organization created when England, Wales, and Scotland established separate National Bridge Organizations.

Note: The Gold Cup was originally named the Bridge Magazine Gold Cup, which is also engraved on the trophy. The name arises from its original sponsor Bridge Magazine in the year 1932.

When the infrastructure of the newly formed organization was completed on January 1, 2000, it proved necessary to select a representative team since there is a number of events, which remain British rather than belonging to any one Union, notably the Gold Cup, which is the British Knock-Out Teams of Four Championship and The Home International Series comprising the Camrose, the Lady Milne, the Senior Camrose, the Junior Camrose, and the Peggy Bayer.

The Gold Cup is the most prestigious Open Teams event in Britain, and is organised by Bridge Great Britain (formerly the British Bridge League). It is knock-out event throughout, and, prior to the quarter-finals, all matches are played privately. Matches are of 32-boards in Rounds I and II (or 40 by mutual agreement), increasing to 48 boards thereafter and 64 boards for the quarter-finals onwards.

The Winners and Runners-Up of the former BBL Gold Cup, and now the Gold Cup, are listed below. It must be noted that in the first developing years, the event ran through December to January, from one year to the next, and this is noted in the column for the years. This was the case until 1948. Special mention must be made of Mr. Boris Schapiro, who first won the competition in 1945 and until his last win in 1998, Mr. Boris Schapiro had won the event eleven times.

The British Bridge League has renamed the event as of January 1, 2000, to the Gold Cup. This event will be directed by Bridge Great Britain, which is the name of the newly formed organization, and which has been selected to continue the event as well as the British Home Internationals and the British Simultaneous Pairs.

Note: With the exception of the 32 exempted teams every team will have a match in Round 1, and those English and Welsh participants, who fail to meet the qualifications to play for the Gold Cup will qualify to play in the Silver Plate, which will be conducted immediately after the closing date for Round 2 of the Gold Cup.

Note: The organization Bridge Great Britain was formed following the devolution of the British Bridge League into its individual unions at the end of the year 1999. At that time, the English, Scottish, and Welsh Bridge Unions won the right to have teams representing them in European and World events, instead of playing as Great Britain.

Note: Bridge Great Britain is run by a Committee. There is a Core Committee comprising three members, one from each of England, Scotland, and Wales, and the full Committee, which meets annually, where the Core Committee members are joined by delegates from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Sub-Note: However, should bridge ever be represented in the Olympic Arena, it will be necessary for the countries to join together again and participate as Great Britain, since this is the body recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
