The recently released Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has shown remarkable battery life in initial testing, handily surpassing its main rival – the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. Multiple tech publications have now completed extensive battery drain tests on the S24 Ultra, showcasing its staying power.

S24 Ultra Lasts Over 3 Hours Longer Than iPhone 15 Pro Max

In perhaps the most notable test conducted by Tom’s Guide, the S24 Ultra lasted an incredible 16 hours and 12 minutes of continuous web browsing at 150 nits screen brightness. This smashed the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s result of 12 hours and 41 minutes under the same conditions – over 3 hours longer runtime.

Other publications like Notebookcheck and Android Authority recorded equally impressive results. The former saw 16 hours and 30 minutes of web browsing from the S24 Ultra. Android Authority clocked runtimes of 17 hours while watching videos locally.

“The Galaxy S24 Ultra packs highest capacity battery ever put in Samsung phone – 5,000 mAh. Combined with more efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, this leads to phenomenal battery life” said Sudhanshu Ambhore, Samsung analyst.

Cutting-Edge Hardware and Software Optimizations

According to Samsung Mobile President TM Roh, the S24 Ultra’s commanding battery performance is thanks to multiple breakthroughs in hardware as well as software.

Some of the key advancements quoted are:

  • New 5,000 mAh battery – highest capacity yet in a Galaxy phone
  • Next-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, built on 4nm process for efficiency
  • Software and AI-driven optimizations to reduce power draw

Roh said Samsung focused strongly on battery life for the S24 series, conscious that this remains a priority area for customers. The results seem to validate these efforts.

Fast Charging Capabilities Also Impress

Alongside stellar runtimes, Samsung has equipped the S24 Ultra with swiftly charging capabilities. The phone supports up to 45W wired fast charging.

In Tom’s Guide testing, 30 minutes of charging from 0% took the S24 Ultra to an impressive 65% charge level. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max only reached 35% on a 30W charger in the same duration.

Phone Charging Speed (0-65%) Time Taken
Samsung S24 Ultra 45W wired 30 mins
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max 30W wired 30 mins

“With leading battery life plus swift charging, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is phone you won’t be constantly plugging in. Whether on long flights or adventures outdoors, it will keep going when you need it,” said analyst Sudhanshu.

What Does This Mean For iPhone?

The battery and charging results make it clear Samsung has pulled ahead of Apple with its latest flagship phone. The iPhone 15 Pro Max battery life, while decent at nearly 13 hours, simply cannot compare now.

Does this represent a permanent shift in the smartphone landscape? Or will Apple strike back strongly with the iPhone 16 later this year? Most industry observers believe Samsung’s battery lead will be narrower lived.

“I expect Apple will catch up significantly with A17 chip and iOS 17 optimizations later this year. Battery life is now a two-horse race between Samsung and Apple again,” commented Ben Sin, veteran smartphone reviewer.

Nonetheless, Samsung appears to have raised the bar for now. With best-in-class longevity and rapid charging, the Galaxy S24 Ultra sets new standards for premium phones. For potential upgraders fatigued of phones that run out of juice too swiftly, it presents a very compelling option over the iPhone 15 series.

The S24 Ultra launched in selected markets like Singapore and UAE earlier this month. Wider availability in USA, Europe and other regions is expected over the coming weeks. With these remarkable battery findings now revealed, demand will likely see a sharp upturn. Samsung has scored an early victory over Apple here – can the iPhone 16 retort strongly later this year? The smartphone battery wars are heating up in 2024.
