OnePlus has officially unveiled its latest flagship smartphone series, the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R, at a launch event in New Delhi on January 23rd. The new phones bring several improvements over their predecessors, including upgraded chipsets, faster charging speeds, and enhanced cameras.

High-End Specs Across the Lineup

Both the OnePlus 12 and 12R are powered by the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, which brings significant performance and efficiency gains. The base 12GB RAM and 256GB storage provide ample speed and space for most users.

The displays have also been upgraded to low-temperature OLED panels with support for native 10-bit color. OnePlus claims these are the most color-accurate they have ever produced. The adaptive refresh rate can scale between 1-120Hz, helping balance smooth scrolling and battery life.

Table showing key specifications of the OnePlus 12 series phones

OnePlus 12 Brings Major Camera Upgrades

The OnePlus 12 sees the most significant improvements in the camera department. It now features an upgraded 50MP main Sony IMX890 sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a larger sensor size for better low light shots. The 48MP ultrawide camera has a 115-degree field of view, which is one of the widest available. There is also a new 32MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom.

On the software side, OnePlus has worked extensively with Hasselblad to tune colors and processing for more natural and accurate photos. There are also updated portrait modes and improved nightscape capabilities.

The OnePlus 12R has a similar main camera but loses the telephoto, opting for an 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro instead.

Blazing Fast Charging, All Day Battery Life

Charging speeds have been ramped up substantially on the OnePlus 12. It now supports staggering 100W wired charging that can take the large 5000 mAh battery from 1-100% in just 25 minutes. The OnePlus 12 also has faster 50W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.

The OnePlus 12R gets the same massive battery capacity and 100W wired SuperVOOC charging, but skips wireless charging capabilities.

OnePlus says they have further improved heat dissipation and battery health monitoring to ensure longevity despite the ultra-fast charging. Adaptive Battery Optimization also helps optimize daily charging to avoid excess wear.

OxygenOS 13 and Android 13 Out of the Box

The OnePlus 12 series comes with OxygenOS 13 based on Android 13 pre-installed. This brings all the underlying improvements of the latest Android version along with some unique OxygenOS tweaks.

There is an upgraded “Quantum Animation Engine 4.0” for smoother animations across the system UI. The dynamic theming engine has also been enhanced to react better to wallpapers and lighting conditions.

A new Audio Switch feature lets you easily switch playback between multiple connected devices with a quick settings toggle.

Overall, OnePlus says they are focused on offering a fast and burdenless software experience on the OnePlus 12 series.

Pricing and Availability

The OnePlus 12 series will go on sale starting February 7th via Amazon and OnePlus.com. There will also be pop-up launch offers at Experience stores in select cities.

The phones have seen a slight price bump over the previous generation, but still stay fairly competitive. The 12GB/256GB OnePlus 12 is priced at ₹57,999, while the 12R starts at just ₹41,999 for the base 8GB/128GB trim.

Here is a breakdown of all the pricing options:

Variant OnePlus 12 OnePlus 12R
12GB/256GB ₹57,999
16GB/256GB ₹62,999 ₹46,999

The phones will be available in Forest Emerald and Eternal Green color options. Early buyers can avail additional discounts, bundled cases and screen protectors.

What to Expect After Launch

If prior launch cycles are any indicator, OnePlus will likely roll out incremental updates in the coming months to optimize device performance and improve the camera experience even further.

We may also see them launch additional color variants down the line to generate more buzz and sales. A Red color option seems particularly likely.

Rumors also indicate OnePlus could be working on bringing faster 240W charging to their next flagship later this year. But substantial technology improvements may be required before that is feasible.

For now, the OnePlus 12 series brings some excellent refinements and features that establish it as one of the top Android flagships of early 2024. With powerful specs, versatile cameras, and blazing fast charging speeds, OnePlus aims to win over tech enthusiasts and general consumers alike.
