Revisiting the Hospital That Saved His Life

As Jeremy Renner marked the somber one-year anniversary of the tragic snowplow accident that nearly took his life, the actor made an emotional visit back to the Reno hospital that provided his life-saving treatment. Accompanied by his mother and sister, Renner surprised staff at the Renown Regional Medical Center, thanking them profusely for the care that allowed him to defy the odds.

“I wanted to come here and shake every one of your hands and just say thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving my life, for letting me be here another holiday with my family,” Renner told hospital staff.

Photos and videos capture the intense emotion of the visit, showing teary-eyed doctors hugging Renner as he expresses his immense gratitude. Nurses, surgeons, and first responders line up to embrace the star.

A Harrowing Accident With Deadly Odds

The January 1st, 2022 accident occurred at Renner’s home near Mt. Rose Highway in Reno, when his snowplow began sliding uncontrollably down a hill. In an attempt to stop it, Renner exited the vehicle, only to be run over by the 14,330 pound machine.

The traumatic injuries he sustained included blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries. With major blood loss leading to cardiac arrest, Renner’s chance of survival was estimated to be merely 10% upon arrival at the hospital. Multiple complex surgeries were required to save him, including reconstructive procedures for serious damage to his torso.

Renner would spend weeks in the ICU and go through extensive physical therapy to regain mobility and strength. Details remained sparse in the aftermath of the accident, with his family simply stating that recovery would be an “arduous” process requiring “small victories” along the way.

Nearly a year later, his visit honors the hospital staff that brought him back from the edge of death – and celebrates his remarkable recovery.

Coming Back to Acting

In a New Year’s Eve appearance just before the anniversary, Renner hinted that he will soon return to acting projects. This follows reports that production is gearing up for season 3 of his Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingstown.

“Outside my brain fog in recovery, it was very hard to be focused on anything but that,” said Renner of the barriers to resuming work until now.

Castmate Hugh Dillon also indicated Renner is mending well, stating, “I can’t wait to get going on season 3. I spoke to Jeremy the other day and he’s doing great.”

And in a social media post, Renner himself teased his comeback, sharing behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Mayor of Kingstown with the caption “Can’t wait to share what I’ve been working on.”

While official dates are not confirmed, production is expected to restart this month.

Ongoing Legal Troubles

However, Renner still faces lingering troubles from the accident, as he was sued by his insurance company over claims related to his medical treatment and property damage.

The actor filed his own lawsuit seeking declaratory relief that his homeowner’s insurance should cover those costs. But his insurer, National Indemnity Company, alleges Renner made significant material misrepresentations in his policy application. They refused to pay his claims, arguing the policy should be rescinded.

With over $5 million on the line in medical expenses alone, the legal outcome carries major financial implications for Renner. National Indemnity also alleged improper actions by the actor, like deliberately removing a safety feature from the snow plow machine prior to the accident.

How these legal entanglements are resolved remains to be seen. For now, Renner aims to continue healing both physically and emotionally.

The Road Ahead

Marking this solemn anniversary, Renner poignantly sings of his journey in a new single called “Brighter Days.” Its lyrics speak of the light he envisions ahead, beyond the trauma of the past year.

“’Cause I saw brighter days
I knew brighter days were comin’
Couldn’t see ’em but I feel ’em
Those brighter days are callin’
I kept on pushin’ through
Now I see my brighter days in view,” he croons in the track.

The song offers a glimpse of his debut 7-track EP, due out soon.

Proving his indomitable spirit, Renner also vows to prevention similar accidents from happening to others. He had used the snowplow to free neighbors from heavy snow.

“There’s a few people that I’ve gotta look out for on this road when it snows, and I tried to do that,” Renner told hospital staff. “I don’t know how I’m going to do that next time — but I’m gonna figure out a way to do it where I don’t have to drive down my driveway.”

As he continues to heal emotionally and physically, this resilient actor hopes to honor the gift of life he’s been given by the doctors who believed in his survival – and believes the brighter days ahead will eclipse this tragedy.
