“When will we see a short Asian woman on the Mavs?”

Cuban hit back that his companies don’t make hiring decisions based on race or gender, but seek people with skillsets that “fit our culture.”

The debate also turned personal at times. Musk poked fun at Cuban’s appearance, tweeting he looked “[redacted] washed” at the Harvard event.

UCLA management professor Ann Warren expects the schism between executives on DEI to widen:

“I foresee this debate becoming more vitriolic in 2023 with legal challenges and shareholder revolts around diversity programs.”

In the meantime, the Musk vs. Cuban feud shows the issue has gone mainstream. Their prominence means this won’t be the last we hear about the thorny topic of DEI in business.
