Asus made waves at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) by unveiling an incredibly fast 480Hz OLED gaming monitor. The monitor’s combination of an ultra-high refresh rate and OLED display technology sets a new bar for gaming displays.

Asus Beats Out Competition with Cutting-Edge Specs

Asus’ new monitor, not yet named, sports a 27-inch OLED panel with both 1080p and 1440p resolution options available. The monitor clocks in with a remarkable 480Hz refresh rate, allowing it to display up to 480 frames per second. This is a first for an OLED monitor and blows past the previous 300Hz refresh rates available.

This new Asus display beat out the competition at CES 2024, including monitors from LG, Alienware, and others. LG previewed a 27-inch 1440p OLED monitor capable of 480Hz but at a lower peak brightness of 150 nits. Asus’ monitor meanwhile manages an impressive 1300 nits peak brightness.

Resolution 1080p, 1440p 1440p
Max Refresh Rate 480Hz 480Hz
Peak Brightness 1300 nits 150 nits

With these world-beating specs in such a gorgeous OLED package, Asus has set themselves apart by creating what is undoubtedly the most advanced gaming monitor that CES 2024 had to offer.

Blazing Pixel Response for Competitive Gamers

The monitor’s high refresh rate isn’t the only thing that has competitive gamers thrilled. Asus’ 480Hz OLED monitor also delivers an extremely fast 0.03ms gray-to-gray pixel response time. This is up to 10 times faster than many existing IPS and VA monitors and results in little to no motion blur or ghosting in high action games.

When combined with the 480 frames per second output, pro gamers will have an unrivaled level of fluidity and responsiveness for competitive play. Asus is clearly aiming to become the go-to brand for esports with this new display. Even the most demanding tournament player will be satisfied by the unparalleled speed on offer here.

Vibrant and Accurate Colors from OLED

Of course, while the refresh rate may be this monitor’s main selling point, the use of an OLED panel also brings many advantages. OLED is widely considered the best display technology available today, with self-lit pixels for perfect black levels and incredible contrast ratios. Colors on OLED displays also tend to be highly vibrant and accurate.

Asus says their monitor covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, making it ideal for gaming as well as content creation workflows. Combined with that ultra-fast refresh rate, this will likely be a dream monitor for video and photo editors that require both speed and color accuracy. It remains to be seen what Asus will charge for this no-compromise display, but it is sure to demand a premium price.

What Happens Next?

Asus provided precious few official details about the 480Hz OLED monitor at CES 2024. But they did demo early prototypes to journalists and attendees. General availability is still likely months away, with some estimates pointing to Q3 or Q4 2024. Pricing also remains a mystery for now.

However, Asus’ push into extreme high refresh rate OLED monitors should spur competitors to innovate as well. LG already teased various OLED panels at CES 2024 equipped with refresh rates ranging from 240Hz to 480Hz. And Chinese manufacturer BOE showed a concept 55-inch OLED TV with a 240Hz refresh rate.

So while the Asus 480Hz OLED monitor won CES 2024 and made tech headlines, it may just be the beginning of a broader trend. Once only found on flagship gaming monitors, refresh rates beyond 240Hz could become commonplace across various monitor and TV segments in the next 1-2 years. If pricing becomes more attainable for mainstream consumers, high refresh rate OLED may even dethrone LED as the enthusiast’s display tech of choice for gaming and multimedia.

This story will be one to watch in 2024 and 2025. Asus has pushed monitor innovation ahead tremendously, but competitors are unlikely to concede victory that easily. With any luck, these blazing-fast OLED panels will filter down to mainstream consumers sooner rather than later.
