Lisa Marie Presley was working on a memoir at the time of her death on January 12, 2023. On the one-year anniversary of her passing, it was announced by her daughter Riley Keough that the book will be finished and published posthumously in October 2024.

Memoir Was a Work in Progress When Presley Died Suddenly

According to family friend Jerry Schilling, Lisa Marie had been working on the memoir for several years but was unable to complete it before her unexpected death at age 54.

“She was working on a book, and she had been working on it for years,” Schilling told People. “It was about her journey. Unfortunately she was only able to get about three-fourths of the way through it.”

Presley collapsed and went into cardiac arrest at her Calabasas, California home on January 12, 2023. Just days before, Schilling had visited Lisa Marie in her home and found her to be frail and still grieving the 2020 suicide of her son Benjamin Keough.

“She was very frail,” Schilling recalled to Page Six. “She had been through so much in the last three years between her son and her divorce.”

Daughter Riley Keough Completing the Memoir

After Lisa Marie’s death, her daughter Riley Keough took it upon herself to complete her mother’s memoir. Keough is an actress known for films like Mad Max: Fury Road, The Devil All the Time, and Zola. She made the announcement on January 12, 2024, exactly one year after her mother’s passing.

“Yesterday was my mom’s birthday and I woke up this morning feeling like I needed to continue her legacy,” Keough wrote on Instagram. “So I’m continuing her memoir.”

Keough will be working with Andy Cohen Books, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers, to finish and publish the book. It is expected to be released this October.

Memoir Will Cover Presley’s Famous Parents and Turbulent Marriages

Not much is known yet about the exact contents of Lisa Marie Presley’s memoir, but it is likely to cover her tumultuous life as the only daughter of rock icon Elvis Presley and actress Priscilla Presley.

Presley married four times, including a controversial marriage to Michael Jackson from 1994 to 1996. Her fourth husband, Michael Lockwood, filed for divorce in 2016 after ten years of marriage. The divorce proceedings were extremely contentious with fights over child custody and accusations of inappropriate behavior. Keough told People that the memoir will touch on all of this.

“She discussed her relationships, her fathers, her marriages, her children, and addiction,” said Keough of her mother’s writings.

The book will also explore Lisa Marie’s struggles with drugs and depression. She was vocal in interviews over the years about her past opioid and painkiller addiction.

Friends like songwriter Diane Warren believe the memoir could provide great insight into Lisa Marie’s complex life. “I think it’s going to show all kinds of things that people don’t know about,” she told Access Hollywood. “I think it’s going to really have her take on her life.”

Upcoming Anniversary Events at Graceland

To mark the one-year passing of Lisa Marie, a candlelight vigil was held at Graceland in Memphis on January 12. Fans stood outside Elvis Presley’s famous home to pay tribute and mourn.

More remembrance events will take place at Graceland over the next week, culminating in a memorial ceremony at 9:00am on January 19. That marks the date Lisa Marie Presley will be interred in the Meditation Garden alongside her son Benjamin Keough. Their burial plots are just steps away from Elvis’ final resting place.

Riley Keough Continues Her Mother’s Legacy

While working to complete Lisa Marie Presley’s memoir, Riley Keough is also looking to uphold her mother’s charitable efforts. Lisa Marie was actively involved in multiple advocacy organizations for children and families over the years.

“I hope I can honor her and carry on her legacy,” wrote Keough. “This is my purpose now.”

Keough says she strives to keep her mother and brother’s spirits alive every day through her own actions. “I feel guided by them every day,” she told People magazine.

Many fans offered Riley messages of support after her Instagram announcement. There is eager anticipation and curiosity around Lisa Marie Presley’s unfinished memoir. It promises to provide an unfiltered, first-hand account of her extraordinary life, straight from the woman who lived it. The book’s release in October is sure to make headlines around the world.
